Being the first African American woman elected to the US Congress, Shirley Chisholm was a trailblazing politician representing the United States. Chisholm, a 1924 native, served as the 12th congressional district representative for New York from 1969 until 1983. When she filed for the Democratic candidacy in 1972, she became the first Black woman to compete for president of the United States in a major party's primary.
